How to Prevent Hair Loss

How to Prevent Hair Loss

Our hair is such a big part of who we see when we look in the mirror.  It sits on top of our heads, like a crown. It frames our faces.  We style it to express ourselves.  That’s why it can be such a major bummer to see our hair thinning and falling out, or even worse, to see bald spots in places that use to be full and lush with glorious strands. But not all is lost! If your hair has been becoming more sparse, there are actually several things you can do to slow down and even reverse the hair loss. Whew! So, let’s talk about the ways we can restore that lovely head of hair.

Eat more Protein

Your hair strands are literally made of protein, specifically a protein known as keratin. So, if you’re not getting enough of this essential building block, then how can your body even produce hair? It can’t! Increasing your daily protein intake is key to feeding your follicles, so that they can be strong, active, and grow more hair. Animal meats are a good source of protein.  Plant-based sources include; rice, beans, quinoa, and tofu.

Multivitamin Supplement

There are also a lot of other nutrients that your body needs to grow hair.  So many, in fact, that even with a healthy and varied diet, it’s difficult to get everything you need.  That’s why it’s a good idea to take a multivitamin, especially one that is specifically formulated for hair growth.  For example, our Advanced Formula is packed with the vitamins and minerals that are essential for hair growth; biotin, vitamins A, E, D, and C, B-complex vitamins, zinc, selenium, and iron just to name a few.  It also contains special hair-boosting botanicals, like turmeric, stinging nettle and rosemary.

Avoid Sugar and Processed Carbs

Our bodies are designed to breakdown carbohydrates and use them for energy. But the thing is, the modern diet is way too carb heavy! Especially with sugar and refined carbs like white flour.  It may be “normal” by modern lifestyle standards, but it’s not normal for our health. Years and years of eating processed carbs can take a toll, and we can develop metabolic conditions like insulin resistance, which can cause hair loss among other symptoms.  The good news is we can reverse this problem, we just have to reduce or cut out refined carbs.  If you must eat carbs, then try to eat whole complex carbs like brown rice or steel-cut oats.

Be Gentle

Let’s talk healthy hair practices! Are you abusing your hair without realizing it? Try to pay careful attention to how you treat your hair when you’re washing and styling, or even how you handle your hair throughout the day.  Be gentle with your hair when shampooing, don’t pull or comb through your hair when it’s wet. When brushing, start by brushing just the ends first, then slowly work your way up the length of the hair.  And pay attention to if you have any other bad-habits, like playing with your hair, twisting or picking at it.  These unconscious habits can lead to hair loss.
